NEW MELOMED BELLVILLE
The Melomed Group of hospitals originally had its humble beginnings when it opened the doors of Melomed Gatesville (Gatesville Medical Centre) in the 1980's. Melomed Mitchells Plain was then acquired in 1998 which led to the formation of the holding company Melomed Hospital Holdings Ltd. Melomed 24 Ambulance Services was later launched in 2003 with Melomed Bellville (previously Jan S. Marais) being acquired in 2004. In 2005, the first Cardiac Unit was established on the Cape Flats at Melomed Gatesville. Melomed is committed to its mission to offer improved medical services to the Cape Flats and surrounding areas. Consequently a decision was taken in 2006 to relocate the current Melomed Bellville by developing a state of the art acute general hospital on the corner of Voortrekker Road and AJ West Street in Bellville.
The decision to relocate was based on the poor location and facilities currently available at the Melomed Bellville. The Current lay-out of Melomed Bellville is reminiscent of the previous political dispensation. The hospital layout was designed in two sections with separate facilities and wards for the different racial groups as was required by the apartheid government. The distance between sections of the hospital made patient flow unacceptable. The general facilities and ambience of the present hospital does not meet with Melomed's high standards. Accessibility, security and parking did not offer much to patients when visiting the hospital and this further motivated the decision to relocate.
Construction of the New Melomed Bellville began in early 2008 and the hospital is expected to open its doors to the public in mid 2009.
The new Melomed Bellville hospital has been designed to reflect Melomed's high standard of excellence in patient care. The residents in the Northern Suburbs can look forward to having a Melomed hospital on its doorstep offering acute medical services.
The highly improved facility will consist of 123 beds completely fitted with new state of the art equipment. The new Melomed Bellville will also offer ICU facilities with 7 Adult ICU Beds, 2 Neonatal ICU Beds and 4 High Care Beds. The paediatric ward will offer 22 beds to its younger patients. A number of dedicated isolation units will be developed in the ward to avoid cross infection. Four major theatres have been allocated for our surgical procedures and a maternity unit with modern facilities has been designed for our expecting mothers. The hospital will also offer improved services such as an in-house pharmacy, dedicated pathology unit, radiology unit offering digital imaging throughout the hospital and a kiosk.

Melomed 24 Ambulance Services will provide efficient 24 hour trauma/emergency services to the Bellville and surrounding areas by having a dedicated ambulance and response vehicles stationed at the new Melomed Bellville. Highly trained and skilled professional staff will respond to any emergency in the area.
The hospital will include a 24hour emergency trauma unit. The emergency unit will consist of state of the art equipment and highly skilled trauma nurses and doctors. The unit will consist of two procedure rooms and a resuscitation room.
Safety and Security has been highly improved due to the exceptional location of the new Hospital and the fact that ample parking has been provided for within the facility as well as outside. Accessibility to the hospital's different sections has been greatly enhanced and the central location of the hospital in close proximity to the Railway Station and Bus/Taxi terminals makes it easily accessible to all that live in and around the Northern Suburbs. Doctors suites will also be available within the hospital.
