Over the past few years, Melomed
Hospital Holdings has shown incredible growth in the Western Cape Private
Hospital Industry. With three hospitals namely: Gatesville Medical Centre,
Mitchells Plain Medical Centre, and Bellville Medical Centre (previously Jan S.
Marais), Melomed Hospital Holdings has extended its services, bringing
affordable quality medical care to the previously disadvantaged Black
community.
New State of the Art Cardiac
Unit
Gatesville Medical Centre has
recently established a modern fully equipped and staffed Cardiac Unit including
a Cardio Thoracic theatre and a state of the art Cardiac Catheterisation
Laboratory. The Cardiac Catheterisation Laboratory is equipped with a Siemens
Axion Artis Monoplane flat panel ceiling mounted radiography C-Arm that is the
very first of its kind in Southern Africa; A. Balloon Pump cardiac assist
device; Intra-Vascular Ultrasound machine, defibrillator and other necessary
diagnostic and therapeutic equipment, all of which will enable a multitude of
procedures to be done.

Cardiac
Theatre
The Cardio-Thoracic Theatre is
equipped with superior equipment and instrumentation from local and worldwide
sources. The latest anaesthetic and perfusion equipment are in use to ensure the
highest standard of care available to the patient. The lighting system has a
built in Sony camera which enables images of the surgery performed, to be
transmitted to a conference facility or worldwide connection, as used for
congresses and teaching purposes. For diagnostic and intra-operative measures, a
Trans-Oesophageal Echo machine has been imported from the United States. The
theatre is equipped to deal with the whole spectrum of cardiac surgery for
adults.
Gatesville Medical Centre also
boasts an eight-bedded specialised Cardiac Intensive Care unit that is staffed
by experienced and dedicated staff who ensures the safety and well-being of all
patients in their care, as well as fulfilling all the needs of the patients’,
surgical and medical teams. The dedicated nursing staff at Gatesville Medical
Centre adheres to the highest standards of professional nursing treatment and is
committed to caring for our patients’ health and well-being. The medical teams
running the Cardiac Unit are of the highest calibre. This new facility is the first of its
kind in a previously disadvantaged Black area in the Western Cape and will
service the Cape Flats, offering convenience and accessibility previously
unavailable in the area.

Specialised Intensive
Care Unit
Gatesville Medical Centre
also boasts a 24-hour emergency Trauma Unit that consists amongst others, of a
resuscitation room, procedure room and five general beds. It has state of the
art equipment and facilities and it is staffed with trauma-trained doctors and
nurses 24 hours a day.
